On Monday 29th August NEON had its world premiere screening in London and, as Executive Producer, I couldn’t have been prouder.
NEON is a dark and twisted fantasy about otherworldly beings stuck in the gritty reality of the inner city. It was screened as part of the Horror Channel’s long running FrightFest at the Vue Cinema in Shepherd’s Bush but the chills I experienced were from seeing More’s Lore Media on the silver screen.
Written and directed by fellow Bromley boy Mark J. Blackman and produced by his long time production partner Roxanne Holman the fifteen minute short takes viewers into Mark’s unique vision of a noirish London inhabited by heavenly creatures who look and sound more like gangsters. Eastenders veteran and current star of Doc Martin Joe Absolom takes on the role of restless and regretful Elias trapped between life and death and looking for a way out. The quiet power of his performance is equalled by the striking intensity of co-star Kerry Bennett a former Casualty regular soon to take up residence in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks.
Told largely through montage set to a score described by the composer Paul O’Brien as “Vangelis meets Tangerine Dream a.k.a. Tangelis” the film is a puzzle to be pieced together in the minds of the viewer with Mark expertly tossing a trail of visual breadcrumbs throughout.
All of this may look and sound strikingly new to you but not to those of us who have been following Mark’s work for several years. Ever since I saw his first short Wax (below); shot for nothing in a suburban driveway near his home I wondered…what could he do if he had a budget? So, when Mark’s Twitter account announced two years ago that we he was in my timezone on a shoot I called him up and asked what he was up to. He introduced me to Roxy and together we tossed around a tranche of ideas, all of which I hope come to fruition, but eventually NEON stuck. It was the short that wouldn’t go away.
Two years later with the help and generosity of an extraordinary cast and crew (massive shout out to Cinematographer Stil Williams by the way – an artist and the calmest man I have seen on any set EVER!) and I present to you the teaser for NEON, a Joker’s Pack Production in association with Moore’s Lore Media. The first of many…
The film itself is getting some great reviews whilst making its way around the festival circuit and I sincerely hope it will make an appearance in front of my home crowd at the Singapore International Film Festival in December after which I am sure you’ll be able to see it online. For now though, spread the trailer and the love far and wide using the hashtag #neonshortfilm and let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
